The Following informatioin about Rocky Point's new airport was provided to us by this link : http://www.therockypointairport.com/english/nosotros.htm

Rocky Point Airport

The Peñasco Airport has experienced a number of stages of growth. We are a fully-equipped airport so that if you are just in transit or visiting, you will have a pleasant and smoothly-run experience.

It was founded during the 1940s when "Mexicana de Aviación" inaugurated its route Mexico City-Mexicali, with a stopover in Puerto Peñasco. The airport consisted of an office with a telegraph operator who provided information about route conditions. In 1973, the current runway was built together with a small terminal building.

On August 5, 1994, it was declared an International Airport by the then president of Mexico, Carlos Salinas de Gortari. This benefited pilots landing in Puerto Peñasco, who, prior to that, had to register with customs and immigration authorities in Nogales, Sonora or in Mexicali.
On September 28, 2005, a new phase began the most significant in the development of Peñasco’s International Airport.

With the financial help of Mayan Resorts Group, an important investment was made in the repaving of the runway and platform; the enlargement of the air terminal and car-park area; the construction of the Fire Department and Emergency Rescue Corps (CREI); fencing around airfield; and vertical and horizontal signage, among other improvements. With these changes, increased security in airport operations has resulted and international standards for security and construction of airports complied with.
